Six Ways to Keep Your Home Mosquito-free

We may be experts in removing pesky mosquitoes, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t be a part of the Kansas City mosquito control solution yourself. The best way to get them out of your house is to keep them from arriving in the first place, and there are several ways to do just that.

Eliminate Standing Water

Mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water, so it only makes sense to remove their breeding ground. The first step is to periodically empty and refill your birdbath if you have one. Next, try to get rid of any puddles that you may have in your yard. If you have a tarp with water on it, lift it up and get the water out. Finally, you should consider using Bti larvicides on any water you may have in your potted plants or vases. These will kill the eggs without harming you or your pets.

Install Screens

Installing screens on your doors and windows is a perfect way to keep pests of almost any size from coming into your home. Once they’re up, check them regularly for any holes that might let mosquitoes in.

Keep a Fan Running

Electric fans are good deterrents for two reasons. First, mosquitoes can’t fly that well with a top speed of only 2 MPH, so they can easily be blown away. Second, mosquitoes detect body heat and carbon dioxide levels to determine what animals are warm-blooded and, therefore, good meals. A fan reduces your signature and makes you less attractive to them.

Keep the Right Plants in Your Windows

Citronella is a popular repellent that comes from the citronella plant, but that’s not the only plant you should consider putting in a window or balcony. Catnip, for example, is many times more effective at repelling mosquitoes than DEET according to a 2010 study. Other good options include rosemary, basil, lemon balm, marigolds and geraniums. Just place them in window pots around your house.

Embrace Camphor

Camphor is an old-fashioned solution, but it’s quite effective and can be a substitute for many of the plants in the tip above. Just place some glass bowls in the unventilated corners of your rooms and fill them with water and a crushed camphor tablet. Once the tablet’s dissolved, which takes a few days, add another one to the bowl.
